about

One of the most challenging parts of the universal human experience of grief is that it's not a clean, linear process that results in somehow returning to a state of not grieving. My experience with grief has been more of a state of being that varies by degree and intensity, in part reflecting the kind of relationship I had with those I grieve. I think our love for people is unique to both the person and the relationship: We love our parents differently from how we love our spouses, children, and friends, and we love our individual parents differently from one another. What do people do when they find themselves carrying around love without a home because that home simply no longer exists? I have been unable to create anything since my last remaining parent (stepfather) died, and one day I sat on my porch and used the sunshine as inspiration for a melody, reflecting on the fact that grief is just everywhere for me, touching everything like the sun. I wanted to present the resulting melody in as many ways as I could. Each cycle uses slightly different settings and mastering formats. To me, this approach reflects the idea that grief might look different and feel different on any given day....but it's always there.
